SUBJECT: International women’s day dedicated to Asia Bibi
21 February, 2012
Excellency,
We would be very grateful if you would accept our presentation to you of a letter and a bouquet of flowers for Asia Bibi on 8 March.
Asia Bibi has become a world wide symbol of the injustice of blasphemy laws. For this reason it was decided to dedicate the 2012 UN International Women’s Day to her.
We respectfully urge the government of Pakistan to free Asia Bibi and to guarantee her safety as well as that of her family.
As you are aware, on 14 June 2009, the life of Asia Bibi suddenly exploded: she was accused of blasphemy. Everything began when she reacted against colleagues who said that she, as a Christian, had polluted the water they were drinking by touching it before them. A few minutes earlier, the group of women was quietly working together in the fields near their village in the Penjab.
On 8 November 2010, she was condemned to death by hanging on the basis of article 295C of Pakistani Law.
Since then Asia Bibi is in Sheikhupura prison suffering terrible living conditions.
She is a poor illiterate country woman, mother of five children. The whole family is being destroyed by what is happening. Her only hope was based on the support of two high level political personalities who showed concern for her situation. The brutal killing of these two people: Federal Minister for Minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti and Governor of Punjab Province of Pakistan, Salman Taseer, for opposing the blasphemy Law, put an end to this hope.
Such a law is seen as creating a legal authorization to kill. It is understood as a divine Law by extremist elements and is widely used by them as a tool of intimidation, harassment, persecution and extra-judicial killing.
We respectfully urge the government of Pakistan to honour itself by freeing Asia Bibi and abolishing the blasphemy Law which is suspended like a sword over poor minorities and individuals. We further suggest substituting for it a Law conforming to the International Human Rights conventions and treaties enshrined in the Constitution of your great country.
Very respectfully yours,
